    Description

This is superb antique pin cushion half doll was manufactured by the prestigious factory of William Goebel and is referenced on page 60 of the Lorrin's Half Doll Book Vol. 6. This half doll is a representation of Mrs. Sarah Siddons after the paintings by Gainsborough, shown above. It stands 5 1/4" in height from base to top of plume, 13" tall to the hem of the skirt, and is beautifully crafted with a wonderful expressive face. It is mounted by wire through sew holes to an antique lamp shade frame, however the lamp socket is no longer present or one was never used. It is marked on the front of the base "Germany" and numbered 3318 at the back of the base. While this half doll resided in my collection her lamp shade frame was draped with a length of patterned fabric pinned loosely to form a skirt and this will come with her. Some collectors may prefer to leave the frame exposed.
Sarah Siddons (1755-1851) was an actress born in Wales and was the most famous tragedienne of the 18th century, most notably for her role as Lady Macbeth. She was also the first woman to play Hamlet, at 20, continuing to play the role for 30 years. She was known for her dignity, for her deep, rich voice and for dramatic gestures. Her portrait was done by the great artist Gainsborough and it is this portrait that inspired this half doll.
